The reason I bought this kit was because my stock alarm system was not happy with my turbo timer and was igniting my engine when turning the key off. I’m happy I got this kit, this way I can take out my key normally and not ignite my engine again(even while it’s running already).
Tools
You will need the following tools:
- Crosshead screwdriver
- Cable stripping tool
- Cable cutting tool
- Electrical isolation tape
- 10mm wrench
- 4 electrical wires about 3 feet long. Can be shorter, but just made these the same length when buying.
Installation
I purchased my kit for $60 through ebay. It’s the illuminated kit that costs 15~20$ more.
The kit should include the following things:
- button
- Illuminating lamp and module for wiring
- instructions
Turn the plastic ring off like a screw that’s on the button.
Now, place the button piece where the cigarette lighter used to be and screw the ring on the other side as shown on the following picture:
You should turn it a bit to get it straight.
Now, strip the wires with your stripping tool and make sure 1 end is short and the other side is longer. The short part will be used to connect on the Ignited module, the longer part will be used to splice into the wires.
Open the screws on the Ignited module with the crosshead screwdriver so you can connect the short side of the wires.
Once you’ve positioned them, close them by turning the screwdriver and check if it’s clamped properly.
Now comes the wiring, we will start with ground wire. You can use the chassis as grounding point. Just make sure it’s connected properly.
A good grounding point I use is the bar used for mounting the radio. In order to get to this bar, you will need to take your center console off for a bit.
Unscrew the screws on the left and right bottom side of the console.
Don’t forget to take off the connectors that’s connected to the climate control part.
Lift up the plastic center console, but don’t pull it off all the way. You are able to let it rest on top of the steer.
You will need your 10mm wrench now to take a bolt off. This bolt will be use to connect the grounding wire to the chassis bar.
Take the wire and twist it around the bolt.
Bolt on the bolt with the ground wire.
Now it’s time to work on the ignition wires and starter wire.
Take off the plastic that protects the ignition wiring. Unscrew the screws on the left and right side of the steering column.
There’s one more screw that’s holding the plastic firmly. It’s located at the bottom, next to the lever to adjust your steering height.
Use the crosshead screwdriver to unscrew it.
Take off the plastic and you will be able to view the ignition wires. They are connected by a connector and inlcude 6 wires.
Pull the resting 3 wires from the center console part to the steering wheel. You can feel the wires if you just reach out for them. Pull them through the hole so can you work on them.
We will connect the starter wire first. Unplug the connector from the key module.
The connector should look like this:
Wire number 4 is the starter wire. The color of the wire is black and white. If you want to be able to use the turn-key to ignite engine function, strip the wire and connect it. Twist it around it and solder it if you want to do this the professional way. Just twisting around the stripped cable part will do though. Don’t forget to use electrical tape to seal the wires.
If you want to disable the turn-key to ignite engine, just cut the cable and connect the starter wire with the Ignited module starter wire. You should connect it to the cut wire that is closest to the engine. If you connect it to the connector wire, then it will not work since the signal will be send to the wrong direction.
Wire number 2 and 6 are ignition wires. You can connect either one of them because our car doesn’t support the Parking brake safety. It should only ignite the engine when you have the parking brake on, but since our car gives 12v when the parking brake is down…. normal cars have the other way around. It gives 12v when you have the parking brake engaged.
Ignited module is not able ignite engine because it doesn’t get 12v when parking brake is engaged. It does work if you take parking brake off, but then we wouldn’t have any safety anymore to not ignite the engine while driving.
So we will just connect both the wires to the ignition wires.
Wire 2 – Ignition wire: blue/red
Wire 6 – Ignition wire: brown/black
Strip them and connect the wires. After connecting them, make sure to connect the connector back!
Check the wiring on the Ignited module and make sure you connect the ignition wires(red) on top, and ground(white) and starter(blue) like this. You can recognize both sides by the lever that’s on the top side. This lever is used to close the module to the button and keep it on it.
Now, reverse the steps where it involves dismounting plastic covers like steering wheel plastic, center dash plastic.
Tire-wrap the wires to keep things easy and nice for the next time you open your shift boot plastic.
Results
I like it, but I dislike the lamp. It’s ok at day-time, but way too bright at night time. I’ll try to find a less bright lamp to avoid blinding myself when driving at night time. So some of you might save some bucks on buying the non-illuminated one instead of the illuminated one.
